Vanport City Panel is based on the history of Vanport, Oregon. Vanport was created as temporary housing project meant to support the wartime ship building efforts of WW2. Between 1940 and 1950, the city's black steadily increased, eventually reaching around 6,000. Once the war ended the population dwindled to 18,000, however the 6,000 black residents remained because of the discriminatory practices outside the city. Unfortunately, the city was built next to the river and after false promises that the dikes would protect the residents, the dikes eventually failed. This disaster destroyed an entire city and displaced all of the residents.
